More of Tre' AWEN

Some folks may say that I am getting "ANAL" about making sure we have our own source of vegetables from the greenhouse, okay so what if I am. How many more recalls does it take for someone to get that there is a problem with how our food is being handled. It all starts with how the crop is grown and goes all the way to placing it on the market shelf. It is of no use to me to clean my spinach very well if it has been watered with contaminated water. I cannot wash away what is on the inside. We do not know what is in our food for the most part. I am by no means a health nut, I am just someone who wants to know that the food I am eating has been grown and watered safely and the only way to do that is to do it myself. You all have heard of that saying, " if you want something done right , do it yourself". I know that I still have to go to the market for some things, I do not know how to get vegetable oil yet, and for now I do not own a cow for the milk. I believe that what little can be done to help us eat safer then we should do it. I also know it will be alot cheaper, have you seen the price of veggies in the store lately! I never thought they would get that high and news reports are indicating that they will get higher yet.

Below is just a snipet of the recalls issued this year alone.

Also great pics from our friendly chickens as well as the goats.  We are going to do what we can to make it safer for ourselves and our friends, tastier to. Gardening is something that in this day and age more people should give a serious thought to again.

Help me in making this a good and informative blog, it is meant for all of us so include your comments fpr me to post please. If you have a good tip or a good recipe pass it on, we all want to know.

Thanks

  1. Birds are supposed to fly free! Says EVE....

In the last two years we have moved to a place that is full of surprises for us. Most good, but there are a few things that happen that catch us by surprise. The following is one of these......

It has been raining a lot here and we have downspouts that are attached to our roof, which go underground and release the water coming off our steep roof about 30 feet into the yard. This seemed like a wonderful way to eliminate the watershed effect that happens when we have hard rains and preserves the foundation of our house also. There was a problem last year when we realized 3 birds had found their way into the downspouts and didn't find their way out. They were casualties of some very small openings in our downspouts at the top of the house. It was a sad moment when we found them near the pop ups in the yard and realized what had happened.

Well this is almost Spring time and we noticed there was movement in one of the downspouts near the front of the house one morning last week. Tony and I were already feeling the sadness because we didn't want to tear up the downspouts to get the bird out, and felt helpless. Eve came over and she heard the noise in the downspout and asked me what it was. I told her we had a problem with the downspouts and the bird that was in there could not open his or her wings to get out. I also said the downspouts were put on with rivets, which could not be undone and put back. She just looked very sad and said she couldn't walk by the front of the house anymore because the noise of that bird trying to get out was hurting her. We both went into the greenhouse and she just couldn't quit thinking about this bird. She said let's just try to get him out. So we banded together and we pried the rivets out, she pushed extra hard on the black accordian part of the spout and things began to happen. It moved a little, then it moved a lot. We both felt like this was going to be pretty easy. She was holding the black accordian part down and I was using a stick to get the dirt out of the spout and all of a sudden I hit something with my stick, I screamed and she jumped away from the spout and said "what is it" and the look on her face was priceless. She never let go of the downward spout and I kept taking dirt away, but I thought I could see the birds legs and that is what I was "saying OMG" about. Well she kept holding it, saying calm down, all the while the bird was doing a jig in the spout, making lots of noise. We kept at for a few more minutes and all of a sudden the bird flew free!!!!!!! It was a small bird a "grackle" hope I spelled that right. It was so happy to see light, it just immediately felt the air, light and freedom. Eve watched it fly over once and then off to tell others about his or her experience.

But I got something from that also. It is just try, I may not know how, but trying beats knowing anyday. If we all tried to stop the wrongs in the world with kindness, love and laughter, we might not be so addicted to hurting with words that hurt. Everday is a wonderful day to learn more about yourself, your friends, and your future. Thanks Eve for remembering how it is to be a bird...and what freedom means to them and to us. Living free is helping others in whatever situation they are in.....even if it is in a downspout, with no windows, computers, telephones. That bird only made a fluttering noise, but you heard it, and didn't let me not hear it.....so tune in folks to the little flutters of butterflies, ladybugs and all the unseen lessons that we live around....visit the blog when you can and learn more about Tre' Awen and the wonderful people, etc who live here.
